John Chowning (1934) is an American composer, inventor, and professor best known for his work at Stanford University and the development of digital FM synthesis implementation.
In 1967, John Chowning discovered a frequency modulation (FM) algorithm in which both the carrier and the modulating frequency are in the audio range. This breakthrough in a tone color synthesis allowed for a very simple yet elegant way to create and control sound spectra changing over time.
